Sengoku Roku - Power Politics in Old Japan

by Jim Wallman
GHS Hexacon, Haus des Gastes, Braunfels, Germany, 7th of May 2016
Battle of Azukizaka

Introduction

This game is about the political and military activity during the Sengoku Era of Japanese History (roughly speaking the second half of the 16th century). This is an age of land-grabbing lords (daimyo), incessant warfare and power plays. We start the game in year 19 of the Tenbun Era. The current Shogun, Ashikaga Yoshiteru, is only 16 years old and currently in exile.

Much of the game is about the power politics of the time, the forming and dissolution of alliances and consequent military activity. However, it is important that under all circumstances, correct behaviour and etiquette is observed. An impolite man is an unlucky man.

Another part of the game has to do with economics as each controlled province provides rice income and possibly cash income. With this income, troops can be levied, and castles/fortresses maintained or built.

Player teams come in 3 kinds. First, six or more player teams represent the most important clans of the time. Second, two of the teams represent large, influential and military strong temples of warrior monks (Sohei). The last team is formed by the Bakufu (The Shogun's military and civil administration which serves the Empire, not the Emperor).

Location and game fee

The game will be played on the 7th of May, 2015 at the XXX. GHS Hexacon in das Haus des Gastes, Fürst-Ferdinand-Straße. 4a, Braunfels, Germany.

The Hexacon is the yearly gathering of the GHS (Gesellschaft für Historische Simulationen), which lasts a full week (this year from the 2nd till 8th of May) during which the GHS members can participate in all kinds of boardgames and wargames (usually but not always) with a historic background.

The Master of Europe VI megagame is free of charge for GHS members, if you register for the game before the end of March 2016. If you do so, we will give you a preferential treatment in the casting for the game. However to avoid game organisation problems, we also expect you to participate if you register for the game. If you do not show up after registering or if you register after the 1end of March, we will already have made our preliminary casting, so you might get a role you may not like.

If you are not a GHS member, you will pay our normal megagame fee (halved for umpires) but may enter the GHS Hexacon on Saturday and Sunday for free and on the other days of the week you may enter the GHS Hexacon at GHS membership costs (non GHS members normally pay the double amount).

What is important is that we need to have at least 30 participants registered at the end of March to decide that the game can be played.
